Topshop's Classic College Kid Mistake: Misspelling Shakespeare

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

How many times did you misspell "Shakespeare" as "Shakespere" in college? A million—two million? It looks like the designers behind the brand Tee & Cake and the buyers from Topshop spaced out during the King Lear midterm, because the store allowed this T-shirt to hit the Topshop website with the above-mentioned error. The shirt was also available in stores throughout the UK, which kind of makes the whole thing worse, given that people whose headquarters are in London probably pass signs for Shakespeare's Globe Theater quite often.

In other news, the T-shirt is kind of weird on its own, no? It reads: "Romeo Romeo, Wherefore art thou Romeo? Shakespere." We'd assume most people are familiar with that line's author, but hey—we were fortunate enough to have Baz Luhrmann's rendition of Romeo and Juliet (circa Leonardo DiCaprio at his hottest) to school us on the classics while growing up. Either way, Topshop fixed it by turning the shirt into a crop top. Problem solved!
