Though we here at Racked are certainly not shy about our devotion to Mad Men, we have yet to take our passion to true fan fanatic level: character impersonation. Until now!
Because it's Beauty Week, and because Halloween is still a long eight months away, and because really any excuse to make ourselves over into Megan Draper will do, we have put together a very special DIY Mad Men tutorial for you. And don't worry, we enlisted the help of an expert: Photographer, blogger, and Mad Men devotee Porter Hovey, who's killer DIY '60s look won a contest and landed her a walk-on role on the show last season (that's her in episode 3, right there). With a little help in the hair and make-up department from her sister Hollister, she demonstrates how to get the Megan Draper look of Don's dreams.
1. For the makeup, a flawless base and defined brows really make this look work. For foundation, we evened out the skin with Loreal True Match in Nude Beige. For brows, Use Kevyn Acoin’s eyebrow pencil to darken the brows. This will really solidify the look. It’s subtle but makes a world of difference.
2. For the rest of the eyes, dust on a light, skin-toned shadow. Add some definition to the crease with a slightly peachy brown. We love Kevyn Acoin's Essential Eye Shadow Set in palette #4 combined with Ellis Faas E208 for this look. Then, use a liquid liner (we used Laura Mercier Black Caviar) or a brush liner to draw thick cat-eye-type lines on the upper lid only, and put on loads of black mascara. Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara is what we used here.
3. Apply peachy blush (we used Kevyn Acoin The Pure Powder Glow and Dolline Apricot) blush from the apples of the cheeks, back along the base of the cheekbone.
4. Add a peachy lipstick, like MAC See Sheer, and you’re done!
5. Now for the hair: Apply a good spray all over your head to add texture and volume.
6. Curl the bottom section so the ends flip up. For the top section, make the curls so they roll smoothly back from your face.
7. Once it’s curled, spray it again and rat up the back with a comb.
8. Brush out the top layer and strategically place some bobby pins and you’re set!
