If you've been following our Fashion Star coverage, you know that thus far on the show, very little air time has been devoted to the mentors actually mentoring in the design studio. On Project Runway (which all fashion reality shows will inevitably be compared to for the rest of time), at least half of each episode was set in the design studio, with Tim Gunn getting lovably stressed out on behalf of the contestants. On Fashion Star, by contrast, the episodes pretty much gloss over the design process (and, really, the actual clothes for the most part) in favor of the runway spectacle. However, Footwear News has asked the House of Harlow designer what kind of advice she would give to aspiring shoe designers, and at last, she has spoken.
There [will be] a lot of bumps in the road, but it’s important to not lose sight of who you are as a designer and never forget who your customer is. I try to pay as much attention as I can to customer feedback and really listen to what they want. There you have it.
