Are You Ready to Start Placing Bets on the Pantone Color of 2013?

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

If you've got money on the table for the Pantone color of 2013, sounds like blue might be your best bet. Slate writer Tom Vanderbilt infiltrated a top secret Pantone color forecasting meeting in London last summer, and reports that blue was the color on everyone's mind. But as Miranda Priestly reminds us all, there is no such thing as plain old blue.

“Blue took so long to come back. It came back last year in a watery story, it’s here this summer in an indigo story—what are we doing about blue?” Pantone's David Shah said at the meeting. So perhaps it will be indigo? A French colorist disagrees: “A good navy is going to fulfill the role that black used to fill, because black is now launching into another dimension,” she said. With a literal ocean of blues to choose from, this isn't going to be easy, but rest assured that by summer 2013, we'll all be wearing whatever they settle on.
