Our Guide To The Best Swimwear Shopping Sites To Hit Before Your Next Pool Party

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Best Retro: Modcloth. “Well, duh,” you say. Of course ModCloth would have retro-tastic suits out the wazoo, but they got the nod because the site has a good mix of the traditional, quirky, and uber-chic, all under one relatively affordable banner. We especially like the Beach Honeycomber one-piece and One Teaspoon’s Sand In One Hand one-piece.

Best Sporty: Lisa Maire Fernandez. Body-surf with confidence that you won't be responsible for turning your perfectly respectable beach into a nude one with Lisa Marie Fernandez (bonus points if you go for the Lisa Marie Fernandez for Peter Pilotto collection). Also seen at Net-A-Porter, Match, and Saks.

Best Eclectic: Suno. This one's going to cost you, but you'll be the most unique bikini-clad sun-bather on any beach this summer. Also seen at Ten Over Six, Barney's, and My Theresa.

Best Suits That Stare Back: We Are Handsome. Take a tip from Rihanna and wear a suit that may or may not be a sentient being, whether cat, cougar, toucan, deer, or horse. We Are Handsome, which you can order from FarFetch, has Rihanna's cat suit plus a variety of other animals to choose from, but you can also find a couple selections at WildFox as well as a leopard bikini that's a tad cheaper from Topshop.

Best Pattern/Cut Combo: Mara Hoffman. Mara Hoffman has long been a swimwear maven but something about this season's designs are all the more covetable. They're brightly colored, interestingly patterned, and cut to perfection. Get ready to shell out some cash, though—a suit this awesome is going to cost you. Also seen at Bona Drag and Madewell, and there are a few suits currently on sale at Bloomingdale's.

Best Knit: Lover. We want to believe that Aussies know swimwear and Lover is definitely not disabusing us of the idea. See their knit line for the classy-but-not-matronly goods. Also seen at Les Nouvelles and Bona Drag.

Best Affordable: American Eagle. Revisit your middle school days and stop by American Eagle. We were surprised to find an adorable corset bandeau bikini for $45 and a similarly styled one-piece on sale for $30.

Best Music Festival Suits: Tavik, If you're throwing caution to the wind and attending a festival this summer, you'll need to prove you're still an upstanding citizen. One way to do so is master fiscal responsibility and look damn cute doing it. That's where Tavik comes in handy, since interesting patterns and cuts can be had for under $100. Also seen at Pacsun and Free People as well as on sale at Swell.

Best Ruffle: River Island. Somehow the Brits at River Island got ruffles right, and the bonus to this sweet frill is the sweet price. Most suits are well under $50. Also seen at ASOS.

Best After-Dessert Suit: Karla Colletto. Karla Colletto uses all sorts of engineering whose-its and technological gew-gaws to tailor swimwear to the body. The sporty designs doubles as a great fit and a totally worthwhile purchase. Also find at Everything But Water, Nancy Meyer, and Bergdorf Goodman.

Best Cut-Out: Rachel Comey. Rachel Comey seems to have a full-on retro crush happening with her first swimwear line, even going 100% cotton with one high-waisted number. But we're loving the halter and cutout combo paired with a laid-back print. Also seen at Beklina and La Garconne.

Best Is-That-Lingerie-Or-Swimwear Swimwear: Nasty Gal. See the summer heat and raise it a yowza with these black and slinky little numbers. The cheapest you're going to get here is $80 but maybe that's the price for sexy these days.

Best Support: J. Crew. There comes a time in every beach babe's life when she needs some quality support, and J. Crew is a go-to for that. Also, they capitalize on the preppy cute look with polka dots, gingham, paisley, and stripes for under $100.
