Print may be dead, but don't tell that to the The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME), who doled out awards last night to the year's most deserving mags. The National Magazine Awards, a.k.a the Ellies, are divided up into two parts: the digital awards, which took place in March, and print, which got its chance to shine last night. Here's what the industry had to say about good, old-fashioned stellar photography, eye-catching design, and solid writing.
The biggest awards of the night went to non-fashion books: TIME took home Magazine of the Year and Bloomberg Businessweek scored a General Excellence win over GQ, New York, The New Yorker, and Vice. In terms of fashion, the industry's wins were few and far between, but the usual suspects managed to come out on top.
New York's "Strategist" shopping feature won Best Magazine Section for the second year in a row, while the well-kempt fellas over at GQ won best design. And despite Photoshop woes and modeling no-nos, Vogue took home the Ellie for best photography for its March, October, and November issues.
Twitter-happy Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive tweeted a celebratory "We did it! Go @glamourmag!" followed by "Its next drink is on me" at her writer Liz Brody, who won for her piece on relationship violence and Instagrammed a photo of the award on the bar at the Royalton.
But Liz Brody and her Ellie weren't the only ones having fun last night. Right before beating out Glamour, W, More, and Real Simple for Best Women’s Magazine, Adam Glassman of O—The Oprah Magazine hollers at his editor-at-large Gayle King and fashion editor Kristina Lepore for rocking yellow to the event: "in a sea of people wearing black, @kristinalepore and @GayleKing STAND OUT in our office!"
Here, here, O Mag, congrats to all the winners, and may print live long and prosper.
