Maison Martin Margiela Fall 2012, via WWD
If you follow fashion and have access to the internet, you know by now that the entire fashion-loving world is freaking out over the possibility of a Maison Martin Margiela collab with H&M. WWD reported the rumor this morning, admitting that it has not be confirmed by either brand, but stating they have it on good authority the next big H&M collab will be with the Antwerp-based house of avant-garde fashion.
For anyone not familiar, Maison Martin Margiela is known for conceptual fashion—think cleft-toed boots, jackets made from plastic tags, anything Lady Gaga would wear. Which, at first glance, makes it seem like an unlikely fit for H&M's cheap production requirements. However, a collab like this would allow H&M could do some fun things with PVC and other interesting but not expensive materials. Plus, the disposable nature of H&M clothing actually kind of lends itself to quirky pieces that are fun to dress up in once or twice but aren't going to make up the bulk of your wardrobe. So in a way, we think it's a pretty great fit.
Assuming the rumor is true—and we're willing to bet that it is, or else WWD would have hesitated to splash it across their homepage—shoes are going to be first and foremost on everyone's mind. Shoe and boots from both Maison Martin Margiela's collection line and their cheaper MM6 brand have a cult following. It's also one area H&M has never quite managed to corner, so it will be interesting to see if they collab results in some well-made collectibles.
