The Secret Life of Ralph Rucci, Designer by Day, Boxer by Night

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Veteran designer Ralph Rucci makes some of the most feminine dresses on the runway, so it may come as a surprise to some that in his spare time, he is a badass boxing fanatic. Rucci himself actually sees plenty of similarities between the fashion industry and the ring, however. He tells The Aesthete:

"Endurance in both boxing and in fashion has to do with your capacity of patience? Trying to let go of expectations on your terms and trying to move, and accept them on another level. But so many people want to talk about my story, talk about my endurance while I'm living it. I don’t see that. So I guess my endurance level is inhuman as the story reads, but if I had to be conscious of that, while I was living it, perhaps I would have cracked. So you just keep on going."

Food for thought. Click on over to the Aesthete to see the whole video, including plenty of shots of Rucci's insane triceps.
