Yay, The Great Gatsby Gets a New Release Date

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Though December 2012 is going to be a little less glittery than we once hoped, there's good news: Baz Luhrmann's 3-D postponed Great Gatsby remake has a new official release date. The movie will be coming out on May 10, 2013, and though Vulure points out that that date is a bit of a no man's land as far as movie releases go, it's actually timed perfectly to coincide with next year's Met Gala, which is scheduled for May 6.

Considering the commercial tie-ins for last year's Prada-Schiaparelli-themed Met Ball—Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin did the films for the exhibition; Gatsby star Carrie Mulligan hosted the Ball; Miuccia Prada, who was the subject of the exhibition, collaborated on the film's costumes—we're sure Anna Wintour will find some way to capitalize on the timing. And we look forward to seeing her try: Next year's theme is "punk fashion," which should make for quite the Gatsby mashup.
