Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

With all the to-do about E!'s "Mani Cam" at last night's Emmy Awards—which, by the way, is what it sounds like: a camera focused directly onto celebrity's nails, complete with a miniature red carpet and everything—you'd think that stars would step up their nail game. Not so. The big trends were nude, nearly nude, and classic French. But since those aren't so fun to look at, here are four stars who brought their A game in the mani department, plus one who surprised with a toned-down paint job.

5. And now for a tutorial on how to colorblock in oxblood by Kat Danning and her nails (two trends in one!).

4. Sarah Hyland of Modern Family was riffing off the "keep it simple" trend of Emmy nail care (See: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jessica Paré, Sofia Vergara, anyone not on this list) but added a metallic tip for an updated, two-toned French.

3. Kelly Osbourne got real serious with her mani. Like $250,000 worth of seriousness. That's how much a black diamond manicure costs apparently, and it's also the best only argument ever made for nail chippage insurance.

2. Lena Dunham was a bit of a let down. Recall that she admitted "I want to shock the world with what I do [with her Emmy's manicure], and/or be stopped from painting my nails a very strange color by my very smart and crafty publicist." Judging from these pretty but also pretty boring flesh-toned numbers that's she's practically hiding in her (gorgeous) dress, Dunham's publicist must have won.

1. Zooey Deschanel, on the other hand, is never a let down where the manis are concerned (Is there such a thing as a nail art connoisseur? If not, she's a pioneer). This time around, Deschanel offsets a blue dress with orangey-melon shade and haphazard crystal bits.

And, for the record, this is her thumb:
