Lauren Moffatt founded her namesake label a dozen years ago, but this is only the second time she's showed at Fashion Week. Last winter, she made a splashy debut with a presentation set in a former Catholic school. Models posed next to chalkboards, desks, and a periodic table of the elements to show off her signature 1970s-by-way-of-1950s dresses. It was very cute.
This year's presentation was less theatrical but just as retro. Moffatt was inspired by public pools and 1960s lawn parties, so she had her models stand on Astroturf, with badminton birdies scattered around their feet. For years now, she's been working in a few consistent color palettes, and this collection doesn't shake things up: There are the red, white, and blue pieces, and then there are the ones in peach and teal. As usual, both hand-knit crochets and geometric prints make an appearance.
Moffatt launched swim this summer, and she'll be doing more for 2013. The suits on display ranged from a navy bikini with colorful bust ruffles (so wearable!) to an awning-striped one-piece that evoked Zooey Deschanel at the beach. One look at the designer told fans she's also got a new project in the works: she's seven months pregnant and due in November.
