Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Monthly subscription services might exist for beauty products, hair products, jewelry, gym clothes, cheese, pet shoes (just kidding...maybe?), etc., but here's one that's pretty compelling: We Are Onyx offers black women an easy and relatively cheap way to hear about and try new products. Subscribers choose four hair, makeup, and skin care samples, and Onyx adds a fifth as a surprise, all for $20 a month. Founder Delali Kpodzo explains how the service is intended to fill a void: "In our community there's a desert of information [...] And if you ever do hear about a great product, you have no idea where to buy it."
