Presenting the Winners of the 2013 Racked Awards

New, 1 comment

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Contain your explosive excitement: The votes are in for a third annual Racked Awards! To recap, our local sites in NYC, LA, Philly, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago compiled nominees for categories like So Hot Right Now, Best Rising Designer, and Best Menswear Store, many of which were left up to a reader vote. On the National side, we focused on categories like Best Instagrammer, Hair of the Year, and, naturally, Baby of the Year.

Before we get to showering accolades, here's a reminder of how everything works: Four of the categories below were voted on by readers in a poll situation with pre-determined list of nominees. The remaining five were left to our own occasionally excruciating deliberation. Nominees and winners alike will be fêted at a party tonight in Manhattan. Those winners that can't make it should watch their mail for their coveted prize, a mannequin head bearing the official golden turban of the Racked Awards. And now, without further ado, the winners.

RACKED AWARDS, VOTER CHOICE

INSTAGRAMMER OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Lucky's Laurel Pantin and Eva Chen, Mara Hoffman, Cara Delevingne, US Vogue, and We Are Handsome
Winner: Mara Hoffman

COLLABORATION OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Phillip Lim for Target, Isabel Marant for H&M, Issa London for Banana Republic, Margiela for H&M, Prabal Gurung for Target
Winner: Issa London for Banana Republic

DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Marc Jacobs, Hedi Slimane, Isabel Marant, Phoebe Philo, or Alexander Wang
Winner: Mr. Balenciaga himself, Alexander Wang

BEST ONLINE STORE
Nominees: H&M, ASOS, Nasty Gal, Shopbop, Net-a-Porter, Uniqlo, and Farfetch
Winner: Farfetch

RACKED AWARDS, EDITOR EDITION

"IT" ITEM OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Céline gold ID necklace choker, the Chanel espadrille, the 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli, the Valentino Rockstud heel, the flat-brim snap-back hat, the Kenzo sweatshirt and fashion pun tees.
Winner: While the Pashli had a strong showing this year, even nabbing its own knockoff, the winner this time around is the Rockstud heel. Statement-y yet classic, it was spotted on the feet of everyone from the most "It"-item obsessed bloggers to serious fashion editors to socialites. It transcended age, style demo, even time and space (maybe not that last category).

FASHION ICON OF THE YEAR
Nominees: J.Crew's Jenna Lyons, naked pop star Miley Cyrus, royal nude-pump icon Kate Middleton, what-does-she-do-again Nicole Richie, and Russian street style star Miroslava Duma.
Winner: It's an unprecedented tie between Kate Middleton and Nicole Richie. They're both discussed primarily in the context of what they're wearing (rather than what country they're the monarch of, who they're married to, charity work, who they're birthing into the world, and television appearances—ney all these things, especially the babies, propel the fashion fervor further). Nicole is a tiny doll that can wear every trend (Exhibit A: all those outfits donned at Style Awards kicking off Fashion Week). Kate is making history, one nude pump at a time.

HAIR OF THE YEAR
Nominees: the short blonde stuff atop Miley Cyrus' head, those Michelle Obama bangs, whatever Beyonce's is up to right now, whatever Rihanna's is up to right now and Kate Middleton's glorious chestnut waves.
Winner: Miley Cyrus. That hair just won't quit.

BABY OF THE YEAR
Nominees: TV reality show star-in-training baby North West, royal baby George Alexander Louis, model baby Vivian Bundchen Brady, blonde baby Ace Knute Simpson Johnson and brand-new Italian fashion house baby Otto Missoni.
Winner: Prince George, of course. That wasn't a fair fight at all.

FAIL OF THE YEAR
Nominees: That floral mistake a pregnant Kim Kardashian donned for the Met Gala, Celeb Boutique's foot-in-mouth Aurora Tweet, Lena Dunham heel gate, that pesky JCPenney Hitler teapot and Taco Bell's bizarre jewelrybomb.
Winner: Kim's Met dress (sorry, Riccardo)

For the local winners in all of our cities, head to Racked Philly, L.A., Boston, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.
