Macy's has confirmed rumors that the department store asked employees to volunteer to work on Thanksgiving this year, news first reported by an in-house tipster earlier this month. 750 to 800 Macy's locations will open their doors at 8pm Thanksgiving Day to get a jump on Black Friday shopping.

Macy's cited a competitive retail environment this holiday season as reasoning, but protesters against the so-called "Thanksgiving Creep" or "Brown Thursday" were very active against Wal-Mart and Target's early opens last year. So either way, expect blood and/or "fun."

Among those slated to open are the Herald Square location in Manhattan, the Union Square location in San Francisco and the State Street location in Chicago. Macy's competitors, including Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue, will remain closed.
