A Polished Update on the Ubiquitous Military Jacket

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Today's pick comes from Racked editorial director Izzy Grinspan.

Long colorblock field jacket, $198 at J.Crew

For the past two autumns, I've been wandering the streets of New York in an army green parka with a detachable fuzzy hood. I thought the look was appealingly grungy, but based on the sad noises my husband made every time I pulled the jacket out of the closet, it's possible that the effect was more Lindsay Weir than United Bamboo.

So this fall, I think I'm going to upgrade. J.Crew's colorblock field jacket is just as practical as my beloved parka, but much more sleek. The two-tone effect is trendy without being overwhelming, and the shape is long but not baggy. Best of all, it comes in petite, so I'll look like an adult who appreciates tailoring, instead of a teenager who doesn't appreciate the undying love of Nick Andopolis.
