After a report from a security blogger said yesterday that cybercriminals attacked Target stores' financial data, the Minneapolis-based superstore chain confirmed this morning that hackers have stolen debit or credit card numbers and other pertinent information from up to 40 million shoppers who made purchases between Black Friday and December 15.
Only customers who shopped in stores are affected by this breach—Target has said that online customers were not affected, according to a New York Times blog post. The retailer recommends that customers look through their credit and debit card records during that time period to check for unauthorized purchases.
"Target's first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence. We regret any inconvenience this may cause," said Target chairman, president, and CEO Gregg Steinhafel in a press release. "We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice."
