Which American designer is the most searched on the internet? A ranking of the top 30 luxury fashion purveyors has been published by Digital Luxury Group, and the sportswear stalwart Michael Kors tops the list. Marc Jacobs followed in second place, and Ralph Lauren ranked third.
Keep in mind that the search was conducted between January and June of 2012, which may explain why Betsey Johnson—whose luxury line shuttered within that time frame—made the top ten, while some of the buzziest designers— like Alexander Wang and Jason Wu, who made major headlines last November and January, respectively—ranked lower on the list. Also, the survey was conducted right after the Michael Kors initial public offering, which may have inflated internet interest in the brand.
Nonetheless, the rankings offer some interesting insight into how designers are using the internet to bolster commercial sales. For example, accessories like handbags and wallets drove the bulk of traffic for number one and two brands, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs. Also, despite fashion's obsession with shoes, they are only a tiny slice of the internet-search pie. Of all luxury fashion searches for American designer products, only 7.6% was devoted to footwear.
