Fashion's Night Out, that spirited September evening of store hopping, celebrity sighting, and free boozing, has been called off in all US cities for 2013.
According to WWD, official reasons for canceling the event have to do with backlash from brands who had to spend increasing resources on FNO during an already hectic Fashion Week: "The sponsors of the event—Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and NYC & Co.—made the joint decision to go on hiatus so retailers and designers can focus their budgets on projects that are more in line with their specific objectives, rather than a big event on one night in September," they write.
However, unofficial reasons might include the increasingly violent behavior of the crowd as the scale of the event has grown from year to year. Last year in New York, for example, the night ended in a mob jumping on top of cars and two arrests, one for obstruction of governmental administration and one for disorderly conduct. That's a disconcerting uptick in violence from 2011, when the most dangerous thing reported from the evening was that someone ate a Billy Reid fruit display.
Europeans, on the other hand, have retained their FNO privileges. WWD reports that the event will still be staged in select international cities.
