Jenna Lyons, via Time
In more Jenna Lyons news this week, the J.Crew super executive has just been named one of the most 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. She was one of only two fashion designers on the list, Michael Kors being the other one. (Sorry, we refuse to count Jay Z.)
As far as listicles go, there are more exciting/controversial ones out there than the Time 100 (Star magazine's "Most Hated Celebrities" poll comes to mind—Gwyneth FTW!). But we do kind of love the way Time approached the write-ups, which was by having a colleague of similar standing in the honoree's own field write a little essay explaining why he or she deserves to make the cut. In Lyons' case, Prabal Gurung did the honors, and the result is a short and sweet anecdote that demonstrates why Lyons has the respect and loyalty of the industry.
Here's what Prabal had to say about his pal:
I first met Jenna when I was a contestant for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and she was a judge. It's one of the most nerve-racking things you can do, to present yourself and your brand to 10 judges in 12 minutes. I'll never forget when I walked in: I saw her, immediately made eye contact with her, and she was the one person out of all the judges who was beaming—smiling from ear to ear. I thought, Thank God. That tells you a lot about her. She's always on your side, not just as a person but as a designer for a billion-dollar brand.
