We stopped by Prada's Soho flagship store last night, where the costumes from a little-known and under-hyped movie called The Great Gatsby are on display. The elaborately embellished, '20s-style gowns—which were used for the party scene in the movie—are simply gorgeous, as are the shoes, the headwear, and pretty much everything else surrounding this treat of a movie.
Here's what costume designer Catherine Martin had to say about working with Miuccia Prada on the film's costumes:
"[1922, the year the film is set, was] a revolutionary time. It's a time in which women are much more employed because of the war. You also have women fashion designers—like Coco Chanel, like Jeanne Lanvin—all actually speaking to women and making clothes for women. And that is something that Muiccia Prada does today. Just like those designers spoke to women in the 1920s, she's speaking to women now: What is beauty? Who are we? What roles do we encompass? All those things. She constantly has that dialogue and I thought that was incredibly appropriate."
If you are in New York, we highly recommend you swing by the Prada store before May 12 and see them for yourself. And in the meantime, take a look after the jump.
