In the wake of a spate of industrial accidents in Bangladesh–including the Rana Plaza factory building collapse that killed 1,127 people–some Western apparel brands are moving production to other low-wage countries, like Indonesia, Cambodia, and Vietnam. "Right now, the name of Bangladesh just gives a bad rep to a company," says an executive at a company that makes private-label clothing for U.S. department stores. But labor-rights groups say the real reason apparel companies want to leave Bangladesh is to avoid the potential costs of improving safety standards there. [NYTimes]
