In light of the The Bling Ring's Cannes debut, director Sofia Coppola spoke about the struggle to get luxury design houses to agree to lend their pieces to the film, which, for the uninitiated, is about a group of Calabasas teenagers who break into celebrity homes and steal their designer goods.
Coppola told WWD, "I think it's not the ideal way they want to be portrayed. Louis Vuitton is this brand based on heritage and great craftsmanship, and that wasn't the side that we were celebrating." But Coppola is respected in the fashion world, and so, here we are: "They wanted to be associated with my work, and they trusted me and helped me. There's a side that I appreciate about Louis Vuitton and Chanel, that they have this heritage and great quality, but the kids in the story are more interested in the bling aspect, kind of the status of those brands."
As for the actual actresses and actors involved, Paris Hilton wasn't worried about her break-in scene. "That was really her house, and we didn't art-direct it. She really has the club room, the pillows [with her face on them] and all of that. But she has a sense of humor about that. She said a friend gave them to her and she thought it was funny, so she kept them, so she's playful about her image."
