Yesterday, Vanity Fair published a preview of Ingrid Sischy's much-anticipated interview with John Galliano on its site, and today WWD published and interview with Galliano's interviewer.
Sischy, who has known Galliano professionally for 20 years and consistently attended his shows, revealed that she first approached the designer in February 2011 directly after Dior fired him. But in her words, the story would have to wait until "John felt he had been on the journey for long enough" and that "it mattered to [Vanity Fair that] the story was told with John's cooperation." It wasn't until this February while he was working with Oscar de la Renta that she got his go ahead. After the jump, Sischy opens up about writing the story, and her personal thoughts on Galliano.
When you begin a story, your instinct leads you into the person. You don't have any preset plans. It's when you're there and fully present that the story writes itself. You have to go in open and prepared to think this person's really, really sorry, or he's really doing this work, or this person's doing a media thing. [...] It's a good red flag when someone isn't genuine, your stomach kind of tells you. My stomach was saying, 'This is the real thing.'
