It's OK To Wear Birkenstocks. I Promise.

New, 1 comment

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Today's pick comes from Racked National editor Kerry Folan.

Birkenstock Gizeh sandal in oiled black, $120 at birkenstockusa.com

Birkenstocks have a certain reputation for being the anti-fashion shoe, but make no mistake: nearly all the fashion editors I personally know own and wear them. Myself included.

True, this is not an all-occasion shoe. It's more of a casual Saturday errand shoe, or a commute home from work shoe, or an "I'm not leaving my neighborhood today so don't even ask" shoe. But you know what else it is? It's also one of the only slip-on sandals in existence that is truly sturdy enough to handle city streets, durable enough to last multiple seasons, and comfortable enough to be worth the investment. Besides, mandals are being shown on the runway everywhere from Marc Jacobs to Chloe and Thakoon at the moment, so you can clunk it up for the rest of summer without fear of stigma. Or blisters. Have a great August.
