As part of their big fashion issue this week, New York Magazine delved into the company culture at everyone's favorite e-commerce success story Warby Parker. The piece painted the office ethos as a summer camp of sorts for talented youngsters with a tentative command of their own voices. Employee quotes end in question marks throughout, new hires were welcomed with pun-ny balloons, and the optical wear was secondary to all the interesting quirkiness behind the office computers. That's not a revelation considering successful brands these days are populated by workers that fit the company bill. The logic is that every employee is a brand ambassador, and Warby Parker is a shining example of how it works.
If you want to work at Warby, the biggest takeaway from the profile is that you're probably already too old and boring. But if you still want to try, see below for some tips we gleaned.
1. Fun facts are the company social currency: Have a good one. What constitutes a good one? Past revelations include an employee that "once held Michael Jackson's infant son Blanket," one that was a "fan dancer" at Beyoncé's Super Bowl half time show, and one who moonlighted as a champion barrel racer.
2. Read Dharma Bums: No, do your English thesis on the entire Jack Kerouac oeuvre. But don't use the word "oeuvre." Too pretentious.
3. Walk in a "gaggle": Preferably with other twentysomethings.
4. Strong ideals go far: Memorize this quote, courtesy of company co-founder Neil Blumenthal: "How we started this business to radically transform the optical industry, bring down prices, and transfer billions of dollars from these multinational companies to normal people. And, thinking more broadly, how we wanted to demonstrate that business can be profitable and can do good in the world, and it doesn't have to charge a premium for it."
5. Go to costume parties: Also, be good at costume parties. Be the costume.
