Last night marked the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast, and while the red carpet fashion is really coming into its own (head here to see the stunning Michelle Dockery, Tina Fey, Lena Dunham, and more), everything else just got weird. Some good weird, some bad weird. Let's examine the essential six items of weird that went down in the three hours of awards-giving below.
1. There were—count 'em—six winners of the Emmys this year. The first two are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They heckled host Neil Patrick Harris about twerking then stumble-crawled onto the stage to present the first award. What are their sleepovers like, you think?
Number three was the actress they presented to, Merritt Wever, for her supporting role in "Nurse Jackie." Just watch the glory:
Number four was Julia Louis-Dreyfus for staying totally, amazingly in character while accepting the award for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy. Look:
Will Ferrell, number five. He wore shorts and a t-shirt with a majestic American eagle to announce the two biggest categories, Best Comedy and Best Drama. His three boys wore soccer uniforms. It was perfect.
And sixth is this side-stepping son-of-a-gun.
2. Strangely, Carrie Underwood was chosen to sing "Yesterday." It was tribute to the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination and the 50th anniversary of the Beatles performing on the "Ed Sullivan Show", which brings us to our next point...
3. It was the deathiest Emmys ever. So much so that "Modern Family" co-creator Steve Levitan, who accepted the award for Best Comedy, made this dig: "This may be the saddest Emmys of all time, but we couldn't be happier."
The speeches given by Jane Lynch in honor of the late Cory Monteith, Rob Reiner in honor of Jean Stapleton, Edie Falco in honor of James Gandolfini, as well as those by Michael J. Fox and Robin Williams, though truly heartfelt and moving in ways as singular as the men they recognized, seemed icky when couched in between NPH dance numbers, general wisecrackery, and in Michael Douglas's case, innuendo that makes everyone feel weird.
4. John Hamm had a beard. We named it Kevin Spacey. It was that manly.
5. There was an Emmy nominated choreographed dance routine. It was bizarre and we'd rather not think about it, but it happened. So. No going back now.
6. ...Meanwhile on Twitter: Will Arnett's orange skin inspired a lot of references to a certain Netflix original series. Oddly, it's not the one you're thinking of (it's totally the one you're thinking of). And this:
