The gold iPhone 5S was the first to sell out in every country during the release last weekend, and apparently, some shoppers who missed their chance or weren't willing to shell out the cash money are ordering gold stickers to put on their existing phones. According to the Wall Street Journal, thousands of decals mimicking the metallic shade have been sold through online stores like taobao.com since the debut. Prices start at $2.00 USD, and one product advertisement reads:
'Dear, you don't need to sell your kidney for the new iPhone,' one of the ads said. 'Instead of paying 5288 yuan [the retail price of the 16-gigabyte iPhone 5S in China], you only need to spend 35 yuan to make your iPhone 5 look like a golden iPhone 5S in seconds'There are plenty of places to buy them in the US, like at this Etsy shop. It's been selling them since February, at least, but only in China is the version called "Tuhao Jin" or "local tyrant's gold."
