Estimates for Target shoppers affected by the data breach over Black Friday were about 30 million individuals shy of the actual number. According to ongoing investigations, a full 70 million customers were affected by the compromised system.
The investigation also found that names, mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses of several million people were stolen in addition to the already reported payment information. In these cases, the retailer will attempt to contact the affected and offer scamming tips (so like, don't give out any more information to strangers and such).
In a statement, Gregg Steinhafel, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Target, said, "I know that it is frustrating for our guests to learn that this information was taken and we are truly sorry they are having to endure this. I also want our guests to know that understanding and sharing the facts related to this incident is important to me and the entire Target team." The company is offering a year of free credit services including "complimentary credit report, daily credit monitoring, identity theft insurance where available, and access to personalized assistance."
