Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

At this year's Golden Globes, Hayden Panettiere did something that is considered quite gauche by Hollywood and red carpet fashion standards: she wore a Tom Ford dress she had bought off the rack. That is, instead of donning something that a designer had bequeathed to her. Ford didn't turn up his nose at the whole situation (he had only officially dressed Naomi Watts, after all), sending Panettiere flowers and a note saying, "You looked beautiful last night. Thank you for your kind words." [Twitter/Hayden Panettiere]
