In utterly terrifying CrossFit news, a Colorado man has been paralyzed after a freak powerlifting accident during a CrossFit competition in California on January 12. Since suffering the traumatic spinal cord injury, Kevin Ogar has no movement below the waist and now needs numerous surgeries, according to a website set up by his family to help raise money for Ogar's medical expenses.
So here's a story that illustrates both what critics of CrossFit allege—that it's risky and competitors are prone to injuries—and what makes CrossFit so popular—the strong sense of community. TV news station KSDK reports that the worldwide CrossFit community has contributed over $170,000 within a few days to help pay for medical expenses for Ogar, who didn't have health insurance. Ogar's family continues to raise money via Fundly donation here, with a goal of raising $250,000.
