After a year-long hiatus, the plus-size women's brand Eloquii is back. In the past few months since the company's relaunch in February, they've established a name for themselves as a truly rare resource for on-trend (and affordable!) clothing in sizes 14 through 24. And the timing couldn't be better: plus-size blogs are on the rise, the community is vibrant and vocal, and the women behind them are getting mainstream attention (case in point: Modcloth's collab with Nicolette Mason).
After the jump, see how six of the women behind the brand get dressed for work.
Courtney Costello, Designer, is wearing an Eloquii dress and belt, and Breckelles shoes. Her necklaces is from Forever 21, her watch is Michael Kors, and her bracelets are from Etsy and her personal jewelry collection accumulated over the years.
What do you own that makes you feel the most like yourself when you wear it?
Anything that fits properly. Clothes that fit right make me happy!
What's your biggest fashion, fitness, or beauty indulgence?
Blow outs and weekly mani/pedis.
Who would you swap wardrobes with in a heartbeat?
Rochelle Johnson from beauticurve.com.
What's the best fashion or shopping advice you've ever heard?
Don't be afraid to tailor your clothing. Everyone has a different body type. You may have to buy something that fits you in one area but is bigger or longer in another area. If you bring your clothes to a tailor they can custom fit the clothes to your body. It's relatively inexpensive for the alterations and you look like a million dollars.
Are there any shapes, silhouettes, or fabrics that you think are universally flattering?
Scuba is the miracle fabric for me. It has stretch and is forgiving, but the fabric still has enough body to hold you in and smooth you out.
What are your beauty must-haves?
Tom Ford Brow Sculptor and lipstick.
What's the best part about designing for the plus-sized community in 2014?
I'm part of the community. I can design clothes that I've been dying to wear myself, or feel like there's a void in the market for. I get so excited when we're fitting the clothes and I get to see my vision and designs come to life. It makes me wish I had the same clothing options when I was in high school and college.
Who are your professional role models?
My parents.
Jodi Arnold, Vice President of Design and Creative Director, is wearing an Eloquii sweater, Zara faux leather culottes, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, and an Eloquii necklace.
How is working at Eloquii different than working at other "straight" size brands?
From a fashion point of view it's exactly the same—we focus on the trends. From a technical point of view, we have a few more challenges in fitting various plus-size bodies, but it's a great challenge.
What's the best fashion or shopping advice you've ever heard?
Don't go shopping in Manhattan at lunch hour.
What's one fall trend you can't wait to start wearing?
My leather culottes!
What are your beauty must-haves?
McBride Balm in a Stick in Lavender.
Are there any plus-size tips that drive you insane?
YES. That you shouldn't show your arm or knees if you're plus!
What do you own that makes you feel the most like yourself when you wear it?
Birkenstocks and socks.
Are there any shapes, silhouettes, or fabrics that you think are universally flattering?
I don't think there's a silver bullet, but I never met a moto jacket on me or anyone else that I didn't love.
Who would you swap wardrobes with in a heartbeat?
Isabel Marant.
Who's your professional role model?
[Our CEO] Mariah Chase—always positive, PC, logical, and smart as a tack.
What's the best part about designing for the plus-sized community in 2014?
They are so appreciative and happy to finally be listened to. It's great to see how nice clothes and feeling good in your clothes can transform your mood and life.
Mariah Chase, CEO, is wearing a J.Crew sweater, Zara jeans, a Theyskens' Theory blazer, and carrying a Roger Vivier bag.
What are your beauty must-haves?
Sleep. And since sleep is often in short supply, amazing amounts of under-eye concealer. I'm not picky.
Who do you consider one of the biggest style icons from the past decade?
Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
What's one fall trend you can't wait to start wearing?
I don't know about trends, but a Sophie Hulme bag is on my list.
Are there any plus-size tips that drive you insane?
We generally believe all of the fashion rules that have been engrained in our heads since we were young are just waiting to be broken. That's especially true for the plus-size woman.
Your closet is on fire! What's the one thing you save from the flames?
The jewelry. Always the jewelry.
What do you own that makes you feel the most like yourself when you wear it?
Black leather pants. I wear them like a bad habit.
What's your biggest fashion, fitness, or beauty indulgence?
Flex Studios. I almost don't want to say it so I can still get into classes. I love this place.
What's the best part about designing for the plus-sized community in 2014?
People are watching and responding. The conversation is changing. It's game on.
Sarah Conley, Social Media and Community Strategist, is wearing an Eloquii sweater, skirt, jacket, and belt, Torrid boots, and a Samsung watch. Her bracelets are from H&M and Coordinates Collection, her glasses are Velvet, and her phone case is Otterbox x Nina Garcia.
What's the best fashion or shopping advice you've ever heard?
It doesn't matter what size the tag says—try it on!
Are there any plus-size tips that drive you insane?
I don't believe in rules. Wear what you love, and love what you wear.
What do you own that makes you feel the most like yourself when you wear it?
Our Perforated Faux Leather Midi Skirt is the most "me" skirt I've ever owned. It makes me feel one-part tough, one-part feminine, and a whole lot of amazing.
What are your beauty must-haves?
Nars Light Reflecting Setting Powder, Pressed; Maybelline The Falsies Mascara; Kevyn Aucoin Brow Pencil in Brunette; MAC matte lipstick in Fashion Revival.
Who would you swap wardrobes with in a heartbeat?
Dita Von Teese.
Your closet is on fire! What's the one thing you save from the flames?
My beloved vintage green coat that was found for me by my friends at Brooklyn Dry Goods. There's nothing else like it!
Kelly Goldston, Director of Marketing, is wearing an Eloquii dress and belt, Michael Kors shoes, a Laura Lombardi necklace, a Daniel Wellington watch, and bracelets by Carolee and ABS by Allen Schwartz.
Who's your professional role model?
Susan Wojcicki, Google employee #16 and now CEO of YouTube. Susan was one of the early revenue drivers at Google, creating many of the platforms that turned Google into the advertising behemoth that it is today. She's known for being a fierce and driven competitor, but also for her warmth and compassion. I think about that balance frequently, and about Susan as a role model for striking it.
Who would you swap wardrobes with in a heartbeat?
Kate Middleton. An endless supply of tailored coats, ladylike dresses, and fascinators? Yes please.
What are your beauty must-haves?
I'm all about moisturizing: Lancome High-Resolution Refill-3X eye cream; Kate Somerville oil-free moisturizer, and Carmex lip balm.
How is working at Eloquii different than working at other "straight" size brands?
Every brand is motivated by their customer, but I think we take it to a new level. We're fierce advocates for our customer and believe she deserves so much more than she's been given in the past. Everything we do is driven by the desire to help her participate in fashion in a way she's never been able to before.
What's your biggest fashion, fitness, or beauty indulgence?
My hair! I'm in the salon every four weeks like clockwork. Lola at Gemini 14 in Chelsea does my color and style, and she's a genius.
Who do you consider one of the biggest style icons from the past decade?
Michelle Obama. So elegant and polished.
Your closet is on fire! What's the one thing you save from the flames?
Burn everything! We get in new styles every week at Eloquii so I'll replenish in no time.
