Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Remember when Nordstrom nixed its Half-Yearly sales in favor of more storewide clearance sales? The company is now in the process of convincing shoppers that this move was for the better. Promotions for its current clearance sale include the slogan "It's like Half-Yearly, but better!" plastered on email blasts and the website's homepage. If the discounts are accurate, the company is right: this clearance sale is actually better then the deals that were offered at last year's Half Yearly sale. Last year, Nordstrom offered up to 40% off current-season merchandise. Now, Nordstrom is offering up to 50% off select items until January 4th, although its not clear whether the goods are current-season or not.
