According to eBay's roundup of the website's top shopped items of the year, yoga pants were not as popular as the athleisure craze made them seem. In fact, more than 530,000 pairs of overalls were sold in 2014 compared to just 423,000 pairs of yoga pants. However, if we are talking about sales of used clothing (which eBay didn't specify), the triumph of overalls over yoga pants makes perfect sense here.
Other categories showed upticks in trend-related sales. Over one million pairs of sneakers sold on the site this year, a 12% increase from 2013. Following in his mother's footsteps, Prince George caused a run on Cath Kidston kidswear on eBay after appearing in the brand for those über-cute Christmas photos. Pharrell Williams's Vivienne Westwood hat moment spiked a hat craze all year long that garnered a 43% sales boost for Westwood-inspired lookalike hats compared to 2013. However, looking at the bigger picture, hats lost out to tiaras in terms of overall sales. 450,000 sparkly crowns sold on eBay this year, making it the most popular piece of headwear in 2014. And in the designer wedding dresses category, Oscar de la Renta was extremely popular: Over 11,000 ODLR items sold on the site in 2014, compared to just 5,000 Givenchy items.
