In the span of a (US) holiday weekend, London Fashion Week has come and gone. London is a hotbed for quirky, young talent, with less of a commercial slant than New York and way less buttoned up than Milan or Paris, making it a truly fun fashion week to watch.
This season, the front row caught up to the runway in terms of interesting antics, with Harry Styles, Bradley Cooper, and Kendall Jenner among the well-placed crowd. Fresh off a New York exclusive on the Marc Jacobs catwalk, Kendall did manage to take her turn down the runway in London, but not 'til after she'd sat arm-to-arm, leg-to-leg with Anna Wintour front row at Topshop. After the jump, seven things to know about London Fashion Week Fall 2014.
On the runway at Preen.
1.) Sunday, 9am GMT: Star Wars characters charge the runway again, this time in the form of Darth Vader's mug on a few dresses and a top at Preen. Less than a week prior, Rodarte showed gowns with various Star Wars cast members in New York.
2.) Sunday, 1:30pm: Surprise! Model Cara Delevingne collabed with Mulberry on a range of handbags. The leather goods company loves to work a good It girl into its brand, having named previous styles for Alexa Chung and Lana Del Rey at their appropriate heights of newness and fame. The presentation of the Cara Collection—available in three sizes and convertible from top handle to shoulder to backpack—included a faux-forest, a swing, two red headed boys, and a pack of greyhounds.
3.) Sunday, 3pm: Topshop Unique stacks their front row, seating Kendall Jenner next to Anna Wintour next to Sir Philip Green next to Kate Moss. Flanking Kendall are front row regulars and full time It-girls/actresses/DJs Atlanta de Cadenet, Harley Viera-Newton, and Ashley Madekwe. To Kate's side is her little sister Lottie, Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet and one more It girl/Brit fave Poppy Delevingne. But who cares, because ONE OF KRIS KARDASHIAN'S CHILDREN IS SITTING NEXT TO ANNA FREAKING WINTOUR.
4.) Monday, 10am: Back to the runway for a moment—the normally very bright, very embellished Christopher Kane sends a shocker down the catwalk: Black. Lots of black. Brown, pink, and green eventually melt into the collection, offering a few photoreal florals and exaggerated, baby pink lace.
5.) Monday, 2pm: Not to be overshadowed by Topshop's buzzy FROW, Burberry brings serious star power to their front row, with a boatload of Burberry-clad actresses and musicians. Despite all the pretty ladies dolled up for the occasion, two gents stole the show here. One Direction's Harry Styles showed up in a bottle green jacket (v. on trend for fall 2014), saddled between rapper Tinie Tempah and The Kills' Alison Mosshart (girlfriend Kendall is no where to be seen, though). Nearby, Bradley Cooper was the filling in a Vogue sandwich completed by Hamish Bowles and Anna. Cooper's girlfriend, Suki Waterhouse, was in the show, so that's prob. why he was there.
6.) Monday, 6pm: Ah, there she is! Kendall reemerges on the Giles runway. The show was cast by LOVE magazine EIC Katie Grand, who also cast Kendall in last week's Marc Jacobs show.
7.) Monday, 7pm: Two items of note at the Tom Ford show. First, the typically scandalous designer sent out a very covered up collection, opening with a high-neck velvet dress that was both long sleeved and knee-length. Second, TF knocked off Jay Z's tour t-shirt via a pair of sequined dresses. Hov wears this shirt as he raps, "I don't pop molly, I rock Tom Ford," with 61 signifying his own birth year. Ford told Style.com, "That [shirt] sells for $65. My knockoff will sell for $6,500." So, yes, sounds like these will go to retail.
