Mary-Kate Olsen would be a tricky person to buy jewelry for, we imagine. The designer and child star loves luxury, as exemplified by her ultra-high-end collections for The Row. She's a fashion obsessive. And she definitely does not have conventional tastes; no Tiffany solitaire for this girl. So it makes sense that her hulking engagement ring from long-time love interest Olivier Sarkozy is of a somewhat unusual provenance. It was purchased at auction from Sotheby's, reports StyleCaster, to the tune of $81,000. It is vintage Cartier and dates to 1953.
The ring features a European-cut, four-carat diamond framed by 16 sapphires and many more diamonds. Per StyleCaster, it went up for auction in NYC on February 6, about three weeks before news of the couple's engagement was confirmed.
