Welcome to Working It, where Racked follows street style into the office. Forget pedestrian khakis and button-downs—these fashionable professionals take dress codes to a whole new dimension. Quick, somebody call HR!
Fashion mag Harper's Bazaar dates way back to 1867, when it launched with the promise to provide "Victorian elegance" to the middle and upper classes. The magazine transitioned from weekly to monthly in 1901, and today is published in 45 countries around the world.
Harpersbazaar.com offers the same gloss and glamor of the print mag, but with a speeded-up editorial cycle that's as concerned with the recent Cruise shows as it is with Kim and Kanye's impending nuptials. Racked recently dropped by to check out what the fashionable ladies of Harper's digital side wear to work, and in the process managed to sneak a peek inside their serious fashion closet.
Megan Reynolds, Senior Shopping Editor, Shop Bazaar
What's the craziest thing you've done for work?
"Curating and producing an event held in Singapore from here in the US. It had to be pulled together last minute which meant two consecutive all-nighters but one very successful event, so it was worth it in the end."
Which fashion trend would you never be caught dead trying?
"If someone asked me even one year ago if I would be caught dead in Birkenstocks and skorts (both of which I am a huge proponent of), I would have said, absolutely not! The takeaway here is never say never in fashion."
What fashion rule do you proudly ignore?
"I have never been a fan of color combination rules. Navy and black, brown and black, burgundy and hot pink—if it's done correctly, anything goes color-wise."
What's one splurge you feel good about?
"A pair of Isabel Marant black wedge boots in suede and pony. They go with everything and I feel really polished whenever I wear them."
Joyann King, Digital Director
What's the craziest thing you've done for work?
"Pushed through a seriously tough crowd at one of Alexander Wang's first shows and sat myself right down next to Sarah Jessica Parker to "get" the interview. That, and had a crazy facial massage in a quest for a more contoured face that left me seeing stars for days."
Which fashion trend would you never be caught dead trying?
"Never say never!"
What do you invest in and what do you cheap out on?
"I splurge on my shoes and bags, but I collect high-street boho dresses in the summer."
What fashion rule do you proudly ignore?
"No designer head-to-toe—sometimes it just looks best!"
Chrissy Rutherford, Digital Editor
Which fashion trend would you never be caught dead trying?
"Dresses or skirts over pants."
What do you invest in and what do you cheap out on?
"I splurge on shoes and jackets. I'm cheap when it comes to makeup, some of my favorite products are drugstore buys."
What fashion rule do you proudly ignore?
"No white after Labor Day."
What's one splurge you will forever regret?
"A pair of Tod's loafers I got in high school that were too small for me. They were the last pair in this pretty camel color and I just had to have them."
What's one big-ticket purchase you feel great about?
"My Balenciaga coat."
Julie Kosin, Social Media Editor
Which fashion trend would you never be caught dead trying?
"Overalls. That's one childhood moment I don't care to relive."
What do you invest in?
I'm very strict about having clothes that fit well, but I never have time to go to the tailor, so when I find a good basic, like a blazer or trousers that look great without any tailoring, I tend to invest because I know I'll wear it constantly."
What are you cheap about?
"It's crazy, but since I'm very hard on my shoes, I really don't like to spend too much on them. "
What fashion rule do you proudly ignore?
"Even though I'm 5'10", I love wearing four and five-inch heels. At this point, what's a few extra inches?"
What's one splurge purchase you will forever regret? One you feel good about?
"I like to think I'm pretty frugal, but I tend to black out the minute I walk into a Sephora, then end up wearing the shade I bought twice. I recently invested in a Mansur Gavriel tote. It's the perfect everyday bag."
Kerry Pieri, Senior Digital Editor
What's the craziest thing you've done for work?
"The craziness is probably just not believing where you are sometimes— like when an evening event suddenly turns into a Pharrell performance."
Which fashion trend would you never be caught dead trying?
"I'm likely to skip all print trends, but I never say never."
What do you invest in and what do you cheap out on?
"I splurge on bags and shoes, but love J.Crew tees and Uniqlo button downs."
What fashion rule do you proudly ignore?
"I'm all about white all the time and boots all year."
What splurge purchase do you forever regret?
"I don't regret any of my splurges, and when I buy a good shoe like a Prada platform, I wear it out."
