Don't Call Me Mommy Blogger: Little Respect, Less Revenue

In the more mysterious corner of the blogging community lies mommy bloggers, a group of dedicated parents who have yet to get their moment in the limelight—and they might still be waiting for awhile. While it's true that no blogger makes it to a $5 million paycheck without a little hustle involved, the overwhelming majority of mommy bloggers have yet to crack the $5,000/month mark.

According to a survey conducted by the Type-A Parent blogging network, mommy blogging has a long way to go before it hits the commercial heights of top tier fashion bloggers. A group of 266 bloggers in the network responded to a variety of questions about their revenue, reach, and how they feel about the label "mommy bloggers," and the results were pretty surprising.

Only 1.1% of the 266 bloggers made more than $5,000 per month and 13% didn't make any money at all. Blog network sponsored posts was the highest source of revenue while social media remained the least monetized aspect of the blogs. Their dedication to the craft remains strong though: 77% have been blogging for three years or longer.

The largest social media presence by far for the community can be found on Pinterest. Combined, the bloggers had 3.4 million Pinterest followers, compared to 1.2 million Twitter followers and 113,000 Instagram followers.

And important: How do they feel about the term "mommy blogger"? We should probably stop using the term. Two out of three respondents said that they either "hated it" or "never used it."
