Johnny Weir had the best hat at this year's Kentucky Derby, which is no small feat. It was a bright-white, feathered creation with a Pegasus figurine emerging from its depths like a ray of campy sunshine.
Yahoo Shine tracked down the designer behind the headpiece, Kerin Rose Gold, to find out how the accessory came to be. Weir had a hand in the design, she says. "He had a very clear idea of what he wanted which is always very helpful. It's much easier to make clients happy if they know what they want. He said, 'I want a pegasus, I love these feather mohawk pieces, and need something that would also be good for TV.' He knew what his outfit was, so we based it off that. Having dark hair made a white hat stand out."
The Pegasus was a children's toy that Gold painted and added crystals to to make it "look elegant." It was mounted on half a Styrofoam ball hidden within the hat's feathers. Weir pronounced the finished piece, "glorious."
