It's time to get to know some of the emerging designers nominated for Racked Young Guns, our annual search for the country's most promising up-and-coming fashion talent.
Wing Yau's diamond-and-opal jewelry has been getting a lot of attention lately in emerging-designer circles. Stocked at stores like Steven Alan and Seattle cult favorite Totokaelo, the collection, called WWAKE, feels utterly in tune with the current trend towards delicate accessories. The organic shapes and mystical stones look fresh, not fussy; they're dainty, but they still pack a punch.
In the video above, Yau, who's based in Brooklyn, walks us through her design process and tells us about how connected she feels to her customers. Amazing intimate detail: Some of the pieces have hidden diamond chips, their whereabouts known only to Yau, the buyer, and whoever wears the jewelry.
