Free People Pulls Model Joan Smalls for Publication Debut

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Free People just gave top model Joan Smalls the Free People Treatment™—i.e. floppy hats, lacy clothing and messy hair made messier with clip-in pieces and braids. The splashy model was enlisted to announce the launch of their self-described "magalog," which resembles editorial-advertorial hybrid publications created by ASOS, JCrew and other brands. Called "The August Issue," it replaces the usual catalog for the month of August and will include features from writers like Kristin T. Studeman and "styling tips, the brand's favorite fall fashion trends, model exposés, and interviews with DJ Alex Richards (Keith Richards' daughter), Natalie Bergman of the band Wild Belle, and French actress, Rebecca Dayan," according to the press release. Sneak a peek below and look for it in stores and your mailbox this month.
