Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
When US Vogue's official Fashion's Night Out extravaganza was put on indefinite hiatus last year, the publication specified that select international editions would still host the event in their respective cities, but all official FNO events in the US were cancelled until further notice. That didn't dissuade the citizens of Portsmouth, New Hampshire: According to a press release, shops in Portsmouth will continue to host their own town-wide FNO—this year's celebration is set for September 4—and Vogue's official FNO logo is still being used in the advertising for the event. There's no mention of Vogue's stamp of approval anywhere in the release or on the web page dedicated to the event.
The event is hosted by the Retail Committee of the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce and sponsored in part by a Joint Promotional Program grant through the New Hampshire Division of Travel & Tourism Development. According to the town's Chamber of Commerce website, Portsmouth's FNO will feature hired paparazzi, a Jackie Kennedy impersonator, and a raffle to win round-trip bus tickets to NYC. If Vogue hasn't signed off on this event, it could be an illegal rip-off of Vogue's FNO idea and branding. Somewhere, Anna is frowning.
