Vogue, fresh off a bit of controversy with its online-only big-butts-are-in piece, has come out with another puzzling trend story. This time, the magazine's proclaiming that for fall, women should embrace their inner #BasicBitch. The article, which was quickly pulled from Vogue.com and edited to remove the word "bitch," begins:
Honestly, if last season was all about the Tevas and Seinfeld-esque faded jeans of the #normcore phenomenon, this season is literally all about the #BasicBitch. And before you just "can't even" anymore with the thought of being #Basic—think again. Whether it is that one bandage dress set aside for birthday bashes, a classic blazer for the cubicle, or that workout tank with a pop of color for a weekend SoulCycle sesh, the idea behind basic dressing is one to note—and one to follow. The "trend" is endorsed by a Vogue.com senior fashion editor, who notes, "These 'basic bitches' have their looks down. More power to them."
Vogue mistakes "basic bitch" dressing for uniform dressing, classifying the "basic" wardrobe as full of classic staples that can be worn year after year. Then, puzzlingly, they conclude their argument with this: "So whether you are stumped on what to wear to your #9to5, or what suede bootie to sport to #YesWayRosé night with the gals, here is a simple guide to help you get back to basics for fall. Only accessory not included? A Pumpkin Spice latte—with no whip." Vogue, is that you?
