In October, Topshop will open its first store in the Washington, D.C. area and their fifth store in the United States. But instead of opening downtown, the company picked Springfield Town Center, a suburban mall in Virginia that's recently undergone a $250 million renovation to become what developers associated with the project deem "the perfect mall."
What makes it so great? It's located in Fairfax County, the U.S.'s third most affluent county, and situated near a Metro stop and nearly every major road in the area. Thanks to the state-of-the-art renovation, when Springfield Town Center reopens it'll have mindblowing features like leather banquettes and a working fireplace in the food court, plus charging stations that can juice your phone without using a cord.

The fact that Springfield Town Center's retail lineup includes a Topshop is drawing extra attention to the project. "They're really excited to be in the D.C. market for the relaunch of this town center, and to bring their high-trend, high-fashion streetwear to D.C.," Topshop U.S. publicist Camille Easy said during a walkthrough of the mall construction. "Since opening in New York in Soho five years ago, they've grown within the U.S. market with stores in Las Vegas, Chicago, LA, and as a brand, they feel it's important to continue that growth in the US," she said.
Topshop has been in major expansion mode this year. A new store will open in San Diego in October, a giant Fifth Avenue store in New York will follow in November, and stores in Atlanta and Houston will open this spring. "By April, we'll have nine stores in the U.S.," Easy said. But their plans are just getting started. "It's only a matter of time before you'll probably see more stores in D.C. and in neighboring U.S. states," Easy told Racked.
