Gucci's departing creative director Frida Giannini ended up leaving even earlier than she anticipated. News broke in December that Gianni and Gucci's CEO Patrizio di Marco were exiting the brand as sales stagnated. Di Marco has already left Gucci, but Giannini planned to stay on until February 25th when her final fall women's collection was presented in Milan.
That was the plan, but WWD reports that Gucci asked Gianni to leave this past Friday, in an effort to figure out who would succeed her. So who will take a bow on the Gucci runway for the men's show January 19th and the women's presentation in February?
WWD reports Gucci couldn't be reached for comment but the paper's sources suggest Gucci's head accessories designer Alessandro Michele could be named creative director. On one hand, this could be a sign that Gucci wants to get back on track by creating an it-bag. But on the other hand, Michele could be seen as being too closely associated with Giannini for a brand looking to make a big change. A source suggests perhaps Michele would be appointed to smooth over the Giannini transition until a marquee name is available.
