What Do Coach's New Bags Remind You Of?

Ads for Coach's furry, pastel spring collection have just arrived, the second season under creative director Stuart Vevers. Shot by Steven Meisel, the diverse cast of models—including Binx Walton, Valery Kaufman, Dylan Xue, and Julia Bergshoeff (who just popped up in the spring COS campaign)—wear peach bomber jackets and jade green leather miniskirts in a cinematic tableau against a backdrop of desaturated suburbia. Vevers calls the dramatic contrast of fancy clothes and blah background an "elevated, artful take on hyper normality," perfectly in line with his middle America obsession (the spring catwalk was an endless desert roadside, and his debut fall collection was shown against images of cookie-cutter houses with attached garages in a small town engulfed in mountains).

Despite Vevers's addition of ready to wear, something that the fashion industry has enthusiastically embraced, Coach's bread and butter is still bags. Two silhouettes are prominent in this season's ads: the Swagger (pictured above), which in its smallest size is similar in silhouette to Celine's Nano style, and the Crosby, which kind of looks like Celine's Trapeze bag (there's a close up of that below). The bags come in colors like lavender and a leopard print called Wild Beast, a departure from luggage brown and logo repeats. The casual Coach shopper will recognize these styles as new—and, with luck, exciting. Though shapes look vaguely familiar (Celine, anyone?), they do offer clean, easy, everyday options.
