Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Matthew McConaughey, the actor who once played a tanned advertising executive in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days took on a role that requires a few more pounds and a lot less hair.  The dad who never quite looked like a dad (save for that time he wore — and defended the fanny pack), truly perfected his dadbod for the filming of Gold in New York City. Matthew plays Kenny Wells, a balding businessman who ventures to Indonesia with a geologist, played by Edgar Ramirez, in search of international gold.

McConaughey has no problem changing his weight for a role; he famously dropped thirty-eight pounds to play Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won an Oscar. According to the DailyMail, though, the actor's wider waist is the result of a fat suit, in addition to a prosthetic nose and false teeth. This is oddly reassuring news.
