Just thirteen days after Mindy Kaling's second memoir Why Not Me debuted, Reese Witherspoon had a copy occupying her nightstand. Paparazzi photographed the actress walking back to her car holding a stack of several books, the most prominent one being Kaling's second publication. The Mindy Project star quickly noticed, Instagramming a close up of the actress toting the memoir.
Not long after Reese's very public acquisition of Why Not Me, Mindy nonchalantly 'grammed herself building a playpen on her show's set, while wearing Reese's lifestyle brand Draper James' "Hello, Sugar" sweatshirt ($125). The mutual marketing will reach new heights when the episode Mindy is currently filming airs.
While Kaling was perhaps responding in kind or they've struck up some kind of deal, it's not completely unexpected that Witherspoon would grab Kaling's book as soon as possible, as she is actually in it. Mindy explains how Reese taught her to smile for the paparazzi when they were returning to their cars after a lunch date back in 2012. From the wise words of Reese, "No one who sees a photograph of us wants to see that we are anything other than totally happy all the time." Mindy admits that she was skeptical at first:
At first I thought that couldn’t possibly be true, but then, on the drive home, I realized how correct Reese was. When I see a photo in Us Weekly if Angelina Jolie-Pitt walking back to her car from the pharmacy, I feel a little irrationally miffed if she’s not smiling.
This could solve the long-standing mystery of why Reese Witherspoon always looks manically thrilled.
