When the Marc by Marc Jacobs line was discontinued, everyone wondered what was next for Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley, the high-profile design duo behind the brand. While they haven't completely walked away, according to WWD the designers have decided to branch out with a new standalone line.
The ready-to-wear and accessories label, called Hillier Bartley, was presented to buyers in Paris during the March show season and will be stocked at international retailers starting in August. According to anonymous sources, the decision to launch Hillier Bartley wasn't connected to the demise of Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Bartley confirms that the duo has been working on it for years.
"Now we are finally putting all our experience into making something that's a reflection of us, of what we want to wear," Hillier says. "I'm really proud of what we've made—the craftsmanship, attention to detail and design. It's been a real labor of love, and I am looking forward to seeing women we admire carrying our bags and wearing our clothes."
As for their future with Marc Jacobs, those details still have to be worked out. Sources say that Hillier will remain involved with the new Marc Jacobs contemporary collection that is taking the place of Marc by Marc Jacobs, while Bartley's new role has yet to be determined.
