Model Andreja Pejic is featured in a profile in this month's Vogue about transgender identity and gender fluidity in the fashion world and mainstream culture. The story describes Pejic's rise after being discovered by a model scout in a Melbourne McDonald’s. Since then, she's been cast in shows by designers like Jeremy Scott, Thom Browne, and Marc Jacobs, and will be one of the first transgender models to score a major beauty campaign when she appears this year as the face of Make Up For Ever.
"There are just more categories now," Pejic told Vogue. "It’s good. We’re finally figuring out that gender and sexuality are more complicated." The model said that some in the industry tried to discourage her from undergoing gender-confirmation surgery last year. "There was definitely a lot of ‘Oh, you’re going to lose what’s special about you. You’re not going to be interesting anymore. There are loads of pretty girls out there," Pejic said, telling Vogue that her career isn't about stunt casting. "It is about showing that this is not just a gimmick."
