France is cracking down on ultra-thin models, passing new legislation today that would ban runway models whose body mass index falls below a certain level. The penalty is steep: agencies could face a fine of up to €75,000 and six months in prison, The Guardian reports.
"The prospect of such a punishment will have the effect of regulating the entire sector," said French member of Parliament Olivier Veran, who proposed the amendment. The ban is part of a larger anti-anorexia health movement in France; The Verge reports that France also passed a law this week going after pro-ana websites. Those who are convicted of encouraging anorexia could end up facing up to one year in prison and a €10,000 fine.
